When Bill and Janet Tempelton (Beck, Mason) discover that their daughter Ivy (Swift) keeps having re-occurring nightmares they instantly become concerned. Suddenly a mysterious stranger (Hopkins) appears and begins to stalk the family. Once a quiet and peaceful family suddenly has turned into a horror.
The nightmares are becoming worse and the stranger will not leave them alone. When Janet is late one day from picking up Ivy at school the teachers tell her she was picked up by a man. Janet goes rushing home in a state of panic to find Ivy is safe and sound in their home along with the stranger. Ivy is sent to bed and Janet tells the stranger to leave the house immediately. Mr.Rose then introduces himself to Janet and asks if Ivy is having nightmares. Janet confused and alarmed by this stranger tells him to leave their house immediately. Mr.Rose agrees and leaves and Janet rushes up to tell Ivy never to leave the school without her ever again.
The phone rings and Mr.Rose asks the tempelton if they will meet with him that he has something very important he must discuss with them. Meanwhile, Ivys nightmares are increasing so they agree to meet with him.
Over dinner Mr.Rose begins to the Tempeltons that he once had a daughter, and her name was Audrey Rose. Audrey Rose along with her mother were killed in a car accident. A car came crashing over a divider and crashed into the vehicle Mrs.Rose was driving. Mrs.Rose was killed instantly while Audrey was trapped in the flaming vehicle banging on the glass to get out while she was crying for her father. The Tempeltons feel terrible for Mr.Rose but then ask what all this has to do with them. "Do you believe in Reincarnation", Mr.Rose asks. Bill immediately stands up and warns Mr.Rose not to come anywhere near Audrey or his family ever again, and they storm out. Back home the nightmares are increasing. In the mist of one of her nightmares in where Ivy is in a state like trance, Janet tries to break wake her but to no prevail. Suddenly the door bells rings and it is Mr.Rose. He goes rushing over to Ivy and begins to call the name of his dead daughter, "Audrey Rose, Audrey Rose"! "Daddy", Ivy replies as she wakes up. Janet is shocked and confused.
The Tempeltons have now come face to face with a horror beyond anything they ever could have imagined. A force from beyond the grave that threatens to destroy the only thing they have ever loved.
MGM brings together a very fine picture here though it isn't 16 x 9 enhanced, It's presented in a matted 1.85:1 widescreen transfer. The picture is a little faded looking at times due to it's age but isn't too distracting. Compared to the older VHS version , This DVD is the best presentation of the film that i've ever seen. the original mono soundtrack on the other hand is a little weak. The original theatrical teaser trailer is included.
