"Schlock" is the debut film from director John Landis who later went on to direct such hits as, "The Blues Brothers", "Animal House", "An American Werewolf in London", "Trading Places" and the outrageous "Kentucky Fried Movie".
This low budget independent film promises to be "2001 Space Oddessy" meets "Love Story". We have an ape known as The Schlockthropus, a prehistoric apeman set on the road or murder and mayhem and let's not forget banana's as well.
Love blossoms for this missing link when he spots a blind girl and falls head over heels for her. The blind girl takes a liking to the ape, because she thinks that he is a dog.
The films satire is funny but very out dated to late 60's early 70's humor.
There are some laughs along the way, but the new generation of folks out there may just scream out "What is this?". I liked this movie for it's nostalgic 70's look and corny humor. It was made before alot of horror comedy spoofs that followed, so if you watch this gem, keep that in mind.
When this film came out back in 1971 it became a cult classic and was a hit, Critics and even Johnny Carson praised it.
A job well done by Rick Baker, make up artist who created the suit for the Schlockthropus and in the commentary it's brought up through out the film on it's creation.
"Sclock" was easy to find through out the 80's on Vhs by Media Home Entertainment is now available on DVD by Anchor Bay Entertainment. It is presented in a Widescreen Enhanced 16x9, 1.85:1 ratio.
The picture looks great, I am sure it never looked this good. The sound was very clear and crisp.
The disc extras include, a very funny Audio Commentary from Writer/Director John Landis and Make Up Artist Rick Baker, if anything this commentary alone is worth this DVD.
The Theatrical Trailer, Radio Spots, Still Gallery and Talent Bios.
