One of the most disturbing and shocking films of all time has finally seen the light on DVD by MGM Home Entertainment. The very bold and powerful horror film directed by Wes Craven (”Nightmare On Elm Street”, “The Hills Have Eyes and “Scream”), takes us on a chilling and realistic journey into the world of lunacy and right into the heart of evil.
When two teenage girls Mari and Phyliss make plans to go see a concert, their world is turned upside down when they run into a group of crazed killers. While trying to buy marijuana for a concert, they fall victim to three escaped convicts who kidnap them, torture them and humiliate them. As the girls struggle to stay alive they are drugged then stuffed into the trunk of their car. Suddenly the car breaks down next to woods and fortunately right in front of Mari's house. The girls give the gang a forceful fight but they encounter more brutality and violence. Their fight for survival is strong but surprising the girls are raped and killed in the dark, desolated woods.
The convicts clean themselves up and walk over to nearest house which is Mari's house. I guess you can say that it's, “The Last House on the Left”. Although Mom and Dad are worried about their daughters disappearance, they welcome a group of strangers into their house for dinner and offers them to stay the night. Soon they realize that these impostors are not whom they appear to be. One of them is a wearing Mari's necklace that they had given her for her birthday day.
Later that night while the convicts are a sleep, Mari's parents go rushing out into the woods hoping to find their daughter. Tears and rage flow through them as they encounter their daughter dead in the woods. Instead of calling the police the two set a clever plot against the convicts. Revenge will rein and Vengeance will be theirs in this chilling cinematic cult classic by Wes Craven.
Originally titled, “Night of Vengeance” then changed for it's release to “Sex Crime of the Century” and then "Krug and Company". Since these titles didn't work on bringing in box office crowds, the infamous title "Last House on the Left" was tacked on and it became a phenomenal box office hit.
To this day "Last House..." still gives chills as the tension builds in this independent low budget film by director Wes Craven, in his debut film as a director. Along with Sean S. Cunningham (”Friday the 13th”) the two created a mood and an uneasy roller-coaster ride of emotions. Wes Craven who had experimented in making documentaries decided to give the film a documentary like style to it which makes it so realistic and powerful. Although the two main characters are killed in the beginning of the film, the film is more about the revenge her parents take on the killers. And let me tell you, Revenge has never been so sweet. “The Last House on the Left”, is still as shocking today as it has always been.

Now available for the first time ever on DVD by MGM Home Entertainment.
Unlike MGM's VHS Edition which is the edited 82 minute version, this is the Unrated 84 minute complete Version of the film (Most Complete anyway), that has not been shown in the U.S since it's Theatrical Release in 1972. The picture never looked so good, Considering the original prints were blown up to 35mm from Super 16mm.
The picture contains a lot of grain and a few scratches but not anywhere as bad as the old Vestron Video Versions from the 1980's. This is the best that this film has ever looked and I can't see possible for it to look any better then this.
Included is the 16 x 9 1.85:1 Widescreen Transfer on the A side and a Full Frame (Un-Matted) version cantaining the films full image on the B side.
The sound is also better then ever before and the best it can ever be.
The disc extras will excite all fans and thanks to MGM for what they have put together in the great DVD.
First there is a great Audio Commentary with Producer and Director Cunningham and Craven. It was very interresting and amusing to listen too. Craven seemed a little shocked himself of what he saw on screen. An Introduction to the film by Director Wes Craven, Rare Out-takes and Dailies containing the scene where Sadie takes out Phyliss's intestines and rolls it around her hands, This scene is about (what seems to be) 3 minutes long and is very disturbing as it is disgusting. Featurette Documentry An All new 30 minute doctumentary on the making of the film with Craven, Cunningham, Lucy Grantham (Phyliss), David Hess and Marc Sheffler. This was a very interesting look in the making of the movie and how it came to exist. Forbidden Footage is a 10 minute featurette with Craven, Cunningham and Grantham discussing the films violence. And the original Theatrical Trailer where the famous tagline, “It's Only A Movie, It's Only A Movie, It's Only A Movie”, originated from. Any movie that gives a warning before the film is O.K by me. A Must Have for any fan of the film, To anyone who hasn't seen this disturbing masterpiece you should prepare yourself this film gets very very nasty, Not for everyone.
